David trained in the United Kingdom, and was appointed upon completion of his specialist training to the University of Hong Kong as Head of the Oral Radiology Unit. He has also held appointments at the universities of Edinburgh and Bergen. David has extensive publications (under MacDonald-Jankowski) principally on the radiological aspects of the epidemiology of disease affecting the face and jaws. His paper, 'Fibro-osseous lesions of the face and jaws' in Clinical Radiology (a medical radiology journal) was the 3rd most downloaded for the 2003/04/05 academic years. Today, it is still ranked within that journals 'Top 25 most downloaded.' Interests are history (has published a book on the Scottish Jacobite heroine, Flora MacDonald) and certain aspects of law (has a law degree). In 2007 David graduated DDS by thesis (dissertation; DDS in the UK is equivalent to a high-quality PhD) from the University of Edinburgh and passed the fellowship examination in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
In 2011, David's book 'Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology: a diagnostic approach' was published by Wiley-Blackwell (ISBN 978-0-8138-1414-8). Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology: A Diagnostic Approach "provides clinicians of various disciplines and skill levels—including non-radiologist readers and senior students—a practical and systematic approach to diagnosing lesions that affect the face and jaw. The book contains a multitude of clinical images, practical examples and flowcharts to facilitate differential diagnosis. To reflect the scope of humanity, the book presents common and significant lesions within four broad ethnic groups, then focuses on appropriate imaging. Several chapters are co-written with a medical radiologist, Dr. Monty Martin, chief of Diagnostic Radiology, BC Cancer Agency, to bridge the gap between current textbooks in oral and maxillofacial radiology and those to do with the head and neck. The neck and base of the skull are locations where lesions are likely to be found." (adapted from www.dentistry.ubc.ca/News/2011/new_books_by_faculty.asp)
David has also contributed a chapter on Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology to Lamey, Salinas, Carr, Koka and Eckert's second edition of Diagnosis and Treatment in Prosthodontics (Quintessence 2011).
