Functional Anterior Aesthetics - The Nuts and Bolts

Beautiful teeth that look good, function well, and last a long time. That is what our patients envision as a successful outcome whenever they visit us for cosmetic or aesthetic dental work. Patient requests can be intimidating if we are not enriched with the knowledge and skill to meet their expectations. This presentation will give you the essentials to enhance your ability in diagnosing, treatment planning, and creating aesthetic smiles.

Oral Cancer: Why haven't the clinical outcomes improved?

Oral Cancer remains one of the most common forms of cancer. In India oral cancer has the highest incidence of any type of cancer in males. In North American oral cancer is the sixth most common type of cancer. The incidence of oral cancer has remained relatively constant for the past 40 years and the 5 year survival rates have not improved. During that same 40 year period many other types of cancer have had a decrease in incidence rates and noticeable improvements in long term prognosis. Since oral cancer develops in an anatomic location readily accessible to observation and diagnosis the lack of improvement in oral cancer outcomes represents a paradox in the current climate of improvements in overall health care. In this presentation the process of oral carcinogenesis will be discussed and correlated with the clinical features that may be recognized during an intraoral examination. The sequential stages of oral cancer development will be linked to the grading and staging of the tumour, which are directly linked to long term prognosis. New adjuncts to assist in the diagnosis of oral cancer will be reviewed with respect to their sensitivity and specificity and application in the diagnostic process.

Advances in Periodontal Plastic Surgery and Implant Therapy: Rationale and Principles for SucCess

Knowledge of both the capacity and limitation of dental implant therapy in the esthetic zone is essential for the achievement of a predictable treatment outcome. This presentation will outline the evidence and biologically-based principles for site preservation, site development, correct implant placement and provisionalization. The role of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as an invaluable diagnostic and treatment planning tool will also be examined.

Angela Demeter, BSc, DDS, MSc, Dip.Perio, FRCD(C) obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Toronto where she was the recipient of several academic awards. After a hospital residency program in New York City, she continued her postgraduate education at the University of British Columbia in the Graduate Periodontics & Implant Surgery program, where she received her Specialty degree in Periodontics & Masters in Craniofacial Science. Dr. Demeter was recognized at UBC for her outstanding theoretical performance and excellence in implant surgery with the "Nobel Biocare Achievement Prize" and was selected to represent UBC at the Nobel Biocare Global Symposium in NYC. Her exceptional academic performance led to her pioneering research in the new Nobel Active implant, which is one of the most commonly used implants in North America for Immediate placement and Immediate loading.

Simplified Root Coverage Technique Without Suturing Using Tissue Adhesive Alone

The advent of the subepithelial connective tissue graft, as described first in 1985 has shown predictable results in root coverage of Miller Class I and II recessions. The techniques including flap design and suturing continually evolve making the surgery more efficient with more predictable outcomes. The presentation will demonstrate a minimally invasive and simplified technique that will improve the gingival biotype and achieve root coverage for single or multiple sites.

Farzin Ghannad, DDS, MSc, Dip. Perio, FCDS(BC), FRCD(C) earned his dental degree from the University of Goettingen, Germany in 1996. In 2007, Dr. Ghannad completed his Masters Specialty training in Periodontics & Implant Surgery at the University of British Columbia earning a Diploma in Periodontics and Master of Science. During his studies, Dr. Ghannad was granted the Nobel Biocare Achievement award twice for excellence in the field of Implant Dentistry and was the recipient for the Kathleen McAnulty Memorial Prize in Graduate Periodontics. Besides his private practices in Vancouver, Kamloops and Yellowknife and his affiliation with Vancouver General Hospital, Dr. Ghannad is the Associate Director of the Graduate Periodontics and Implant Surgery at the University of British Columbia. He actively lectures nationally in study clubs and courses on the subject of Periodontics and Implant surgery.

Aesthetic Periodontal & Implant Surgery in the Ailing Anterior Maxilla

This course focuses on the management of various aesthetic challenges we face during rehabilitation of the anterior maxilla. There are several anatomic landmarks or findings that test our treatment planning and treatment delivery abilities. Periodontal surgeries can improve upon high smile lines (gummy smiles), excessive gingival display, mucogingival deformities and restorative shortcomings or challenges. The use of implants with careful planning and consideration of all biological principles (for soft and hard tissues) can truly offer some amazing "comebacks" in otherwise devastating scenarios. Implant designs and knowhow allow us to utilize our knowledge in periodontal surgery and healing to enhance our final anterior restorative results. Anterior Aesthetic cases will be highlighted in this course from beginning to end, with and without the use of implants.

Tassos Irinakis, DDS, MSc, Dip.Perio, FRCD(C) is the Director of Graduate Periodontics & Implant Surgery at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Dentistry. He is a Certified Specialist in Periodontics, a Periodontal Consultant & Surgeon at Vancouver Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor at UBC. Dr. Irinakis has been honoured twice by the American Academy of Periodontology with the "2005 Educator Award" and the "2010 Educator Award" for Outstanding Mentoring and Excellence in Teaching in Periodontics. He also serves as a Reviewer for various journals, including the Journal of Periodontology, the Oral Surgery Journal and the Journal of Implant & Advanced Clinical Dentistry. He travels frequently to lecture nationally and internationally on the topic of Implants and Advanced Bone Grafting along with hosting numerous surgical Hands-On courses. He sees patients in his private practice in Vancouver & Kamloops, BC.
