Vietnam Community Program

Our graduates are effecting positive change in Canada and around the world and we want to build on these strengths to meet the challenges of a changing society. We want to renew the University by investing in five key pillars – people, learning research, community and internationalization. Our goal is ambitious, but so is our vision.

The Faculty of Dentistry at UBC is recognized as a world-class teaching and research institution. Our mission is to advance oral health through outstanding education, research and community service. Through this mission we strive to produce well-educated graduates who are ably prepared to meet the oral health and science needs of their communities.

Statements:

  • Vietnam Dental ClinicThe concept of UBC as a truly international university could be fostered in the design and promotion of both undergraduate and graduate programs with a focused "international" character.
  • To participate as an active member of the society of the twenty-first century by educating future citizens to think globally and by advancing international scholarship and research.
  • Work with secondary and post-secondary institutions to explore opportunities for collaboration and innovation.
  • Strengthen our efforts to “internationalize” the campus by increasing the numbers of international students from around the world, and by encouraging more Canadian students to enroll in study-abroad programs. We should also increase the numbers of international faculty and staff exchanges, and invite more international events onto the campus.
  • Concentrate our international academic and research initiatives in three major areas: Asia-Pacific, the Americas and Europe.

PREAMBLE – Vietnam Externship

Dental ChairAs part of the promotion of overall health and wellness, dental education programs are required worldwide in the prevention and management of oral disease. The development of programs that focus on a shift in attitudes and behaviors in oral health prevention and awareness, to be effective, must be sustainable; values toward the preservation of hard and soft tissue of the oral cavity (teeth and mucosa) for function and esthetics need to be assessed and a strategy developed that is culturally sensitive and flexible for developing countries.

Recognizing the need for increased oral health service, oral health prevention and rehabilitative treatment strategies, the Faculty of Dentistry, general practice residency program, has established a collaborative international rotation in Vietnam. This international experience has been designed to broaden the scope of learning for dental postgraduate students to include an understanding of regional diseases process, treatment modalities, and cultural competency.

HospitalDuring the present academic year, UBC residents will be undertaking some groundbreaking work in the management of "head and neck" cancer patients at the Cancer Centre in Ho Chi Minh City. Residents will perform oral health assessments, emergency treatment and required treatment prior to head and neck therapy. They will collaborate with colleagues at the University of Ho Chi Minh and the Cancer Centre to establish a pre-radiation and post-radiation program protocol. In addition, residents will rotate through the National Hospital observing OMFS and Anesthesia.

Educational objectives for the Vietnam externship component of the University of British Columbia General Practice Residency:

  • To gain competence in alternative modalities in the provision of health care, specifically oral health, in a developing country.
  • To expand on the scope of familiarity with various disease processes and traumatic injuries involving the head and neck especially with respect to pathologies of high prevalence in Asian populations.
  • To gain knowledge regarding different cultural beliefs and behaviors in general, and as well as specific to health care, and be able to apply this heightened level of understanding to the large multicultural population of Canada.
  • To offer educational reciprocity as well as possible aid to improve the provision of oral health care in the Vietnamese population.
  • To foster educational and research development that can be mutually beneficial to Vietnam and Canada.
  • To gain knowledge regarding Early Childhood Caries and provide charity pediatric dental services.
