Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I become a patient?
A. Patients are selected by attending a screening appointment. This is a visual assessment of a person's dental needs. We do not select patients based on their income etc.; selection is based strictly on dental needs.

Q. How long until I receive treatment after I've been screened?
A. After being screened, assignment to a dental student or dental hygiene student to commence treatment could be immediate or treatment may not begin until the next semester. The waiting period depends on when you were screened, your dental needs, and student requirements. Screening appointments are held throughout each semester.

Q. What if I'm in pain?
A. The clinic offers urgent care services for relief of pain to non-registered patients. This clinic runs by appointment only.

Q. What kinds of dental work do the students do?
A. The dental students perform a full range of General Dentistry including basic preventative and restorative work; Prosthodontics (crown, bridge, partial and full dentures), Endodontics (root canal therapy), Periodontics (treatment of gum disease and gum surgery), Orthodontics (teeth straightening), and Oral Surgery (extractions, including wisdom teeth). The dental hygiene students perform dental hygiene procedures. The Oral Health Centre also offers treatment at a reduced fee in specialized fields such as Oral Implants and Graduate Periodontics, and Graduate Endodontics.

Q. Does the Clinic treat children?
A. Children are accepted as patients by the same process as adults through screening. The clinic does not treat children less than 5 years of age. UBC also provides treatment for children at our satellite clinic located at Douglas College in New Westminster. This clinic works in conjunction with various local health departments throughout the Lower Mainland. For more information regarding becoming a patient at the Douglas College site, contact your local Health Unit to see if they participate in this program.

Q. Is the quality of work good?
A. Qualified licensed dental/dental hygiene practitioners and Faculty members of the UBC Dental Clinic strictly supervise all work performed by the dental/dental hygiene students. Appointment times however are greater in length than one would normally find at a private dental office.

Q. How much are the fees?
A. The fees are reduced by approximately 30% to those set out each year by the Association of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia. This reduction applies only to treatment performed by the third and fourth year dental students.

Q. Does the clinic offer payment plans?
A. Payment is required at the time the treatment is completed. In the case of major dental treatment that requires fabrication at a dental laboratory (crown, bridges, etc.), half of the total fee is required prior to the item going to the lab (plus a previous outstanding balance) and the other half is required upon placement of the procedure.

Q. Does the clinic accept Dental Insurance?
A. UBC Dental Clinic accepts all Dental Insurance packages. However, UBC Dental Clinic bills directly to Pacific Blue Cross and The Ministry of Social Services only. All other insurance companies reimburse the patient directly after payment is made to the dental clinic.
