Orthodontic Treatment Community Program
The University of British Columbia dental faculty accepts patients from the general public to receive orthodontic treatment (braces and other appliances) in the undergraduate program.
The ideal age for an orthodontic consultation is between 7 and 11 years of age, before facial growth is complete. The type of patient most suitable for the orthodontic program is someone who requires single arch treatment, (i.e. only the upper arch or only the lower arch) and that will take 9 months or less to complete the active phase of treatment.
Screening appointments are conducted during the months of January, February, March, and April to select appropriate patients for treatment beginning in September.
The screening appointment is two hours long, free of charge, and consists of a certified orthodontist indicating that "yes" you have the teeth/jaws we are studying and we can treat you here, or "no" you do not have the teeth/jaws we are studying and we cannot treat you here. It should be noted that we do not provide "second opinions".
If the candidate appears suitable for orthodontic treatment at UBC, the next appointment is for "Records"; consisting of radiographs, photographs and impressions for study casts; all legally necessary for treatment to be worked up. The fee for records is $250.00.
Patients are selected who require less than one year of active orthodontic treatment, however, unexpected facial growth or other factors may contribute to a slightly longer treatment, resulting in a fee for the additional year of treatment.
Once the teeth or jaw have been moved into the proper position, the
active appliance or braces are removed and the patient wears retainers
for the next 24
months.
Retainers are worn to keep the jaw or teeth from returning to
the original position.
Orthodontic appointments are Friday mornings only. Patients are at UBC from 8-11am before Christmas and from 9:30-12:30pm after Christmas.
For the first 18 months patients visit the clinic once every month for the morning.
For the second 18 months patients visit the clinic once every 2nd month, for one hour only.
