Welcome Notes from Alumni for the Class of 2025

Welcomes to the DMD Class from:

You will make a career out of fixing teeth, but don’t forget you are also creating smiles. Don’t belittle the importance of the work you do. The impact of your work will live on for every patient’s lifetime and will have long lasting effects in so many ways. It’s an amazing feeling for both you and the patient when you both look at a tooth that was treated decades ago and still looks like the day it was placed. Welcome to an amazing profession!

Welcome to UBC’s amazing Faculty of Dentistry, as you begin your journey and adventure of your career. Make the most of all your experiences in and out of clinic or with your medical colleagues (PBL no-less), and all opportunities to meet faculty and private practitioners, and public health outreach initiatives or unique global electives such as those in Japan or Vietnam (if possible by then).

You’re going to have many bonding opportunities with your dental classmates. As a pediatric dentist and UBC Dentistry alumnus, I’m proud of my UBC dental roots which have anchored me in a fulfilling career that strives to give back to the community and to student dentists like you. Looking forward to meeting you one day if we’re lucky! Cheers to coming aboard for a wild ride at UBC Dentistry!

Welcome to a wonderful life ahead of you. Dentistry will open up so many wonderful experiences. Get to know your patients. Be interested in them. Most of all, do not look at how much your income is, but enjoy your experiences with the people you are caring for, because of the close and confidential relation you will establish will make each day when you come to work a fun experience. You want your life to be fun and that should be your goal in life.

I live in a small town. I’m retired. I worked 40 years here. I did didn’t make a fortune in income. I retired a healthy specimen. I was always fair with my fees and I think I provided a good service to my patients and community. My pension benefit is that every day I do my walk into town to get my mail and I always get greeted by an old patient with a happy “Hi”. What a great way to spend my retirement!

Dentistry gave me a great vehicle to enjoy my fellow humans. Let it be yours.

Hooray!!!! You are one of the special few that got accepted into UBC Dentistry!!!

It was hard to GET IN, and it will be hard to STAY IN. But in the end it will be SO WORTH IT!

Challenge yourself by taking it ALL in, and enjoy every moment.

You will build relationships that you’ll cherish forever.
Don’t blink! You don’t want to miss anything!

Congratulations on your entrance into the best profession in the world (in my opinion!) My name is Dr. Greg Chang, a UBC Dentistry Alumnus from 1986 (yes an old guy!). I say the best profession, as you are entering a profession that is filled with opportunities to help people, learn amazing clinical skills to bring smiles to people, align with other like minded colleagues and enjoy a lifestyle that will enable you to pursue your lifelong passions in a exciting and ever changing field. Many generations of dentists before you have paved the way for us to enjoy the benefits and respect dentistry enjoys, and I urge you to continue our mission of putting our patients’ needs and concerns first. If you can remember this, you will enjoy a career of success you can only imagine. In a world where there are more and more dentists graduating every year, it is important to build a great rapport and trust with your patients so they will continue to return to you for their care. Be patient, do the right thing, and you will be rewarded. And also remember when you have the “Dr.” title before your name, you will have a great platform to do positive things not only in your practice, but in your community as well. That is what many of your colleagues have done for you decades ago, and let that not be lost as you use your training and experience here at UBC to make a difference in the world. Maintain the integrity of our profession as we have fought hard for the respect we have. Being a dentist is not only an honour, it is a privilege to serve, and as such we hope you decide to give back in whatever way you see fit from the experiences you will enjoy at UBC. Feel free to reach out to me for guidance through your journey, and welcome to UBC Dentistry!

Welcome to an exciting, challenging and rewarding educational experience at UBC! Your time at UBC dentistry will pass very quickly. (although it may seem like an eternity in the beginning). Savour the time learning and treasure the relationships that you build along the way. May you have as blessed a time during your studies as I did.

Best wishes!

To my future dental colleague, and UBC alum!

Congrats on your first step toward a glorious adventure of life long learning and friendships.

Tip to success in dental school: Don’t bring up “work-life balance” with your profs....but live your life to the fullest anyway!

It is a blessing to have a passionate student like you. You have chosen a profession like no other and you can get out of it what you put into it.

There is so much knowledge out there and this is the beginning of a lifetime learning opportunity.

All the best!

Congratulations on beginning your journey into an incredible profession!

Enjoy the camaraderie of your class and colleagues, the struggles and victories ahead. Make it yours and see you on the other side.

Welcome to the UBC Dentistry family!

One of the best parts of dental school is all the friends you are going to make! They’ll be there for you through all the struggles, which there will be a few of! But together, you guys will get through anything by supporting each other.

I’m looking forward to meeting you all at our social events and answering any questions you have!

Well, you are on your way to what I hope will be a rewarding career! The next 4 years will be difficult, at times, but worth it in the end.

Forge strong connects with some or all of your classmates. They will help lighten the load during the DMD program, but more importantly they will also develop into life-long friendships. Very few people understand the stress of this profession. Your friends & colleagues are the exception. My best buddies are several of my classmates.

I wish you ‘All the Best’ for the coming years! Good Luck!!!

Congratulations on your admission to the UBC Faculty of Dentistry, and welcome to our “dental family!” You’ll have lots of wonderful and new experiences as you navigate your academic and professional path in the coming years. Our friendly faculty and staff, along with your schoolmates in the higher years, are ready to guide and support you, so don’t hesitate to reach out and ask for assistance. Making the most of your UBC dental experience will take hard work, but also enjoy the journey and smell the roses along the way. Your personal growth will occur in leaps and bounds. You’ll quickly understand what it means to be a professional when you accept the responsibility of caring for your patients with respect, compassion, and skill. Being accepted to our program is not just a single life-changing event, but just the beginning of a continuum of life-changing experiences. Always treat everyone as you would like to be treated, and you’ll have a deeply rewarding and enjoyable career. Best wishes for much happiness and success in our world-class dental program and in your future as a dental professional.

Congratulations! You are starting the journey that is not only dental school, but the career of dentistry. You’ve undoubtedly worked hard to get to this point, and you should take the time to reflect and appreciate that accomplishment. I urge you to continue to do that, at all the steps along the way. Celebrate making it to the next step, gather the people who have supported your journey, and share the joy and excitement with them. You’ve got not only four fun years ahead of you, but a full career. Like anything, I found dental school and the career to be what you make it, and I encourage you to appreciate all aspects of the schooling and career: make friends, attend the events, branch out in your interests, appreciate life in Vancouver, acknowledge schooling/work can be considerably challenging at times, embrace it and push forward alongside your peers/friends/family, share the highs and lows with the special people in your life, get out of your comfort zone and travel/participate in an international program, hold yourself to the highest standards you think you can achieve, don’t let others try and dictate the accomplishments you should be shooting for, practice being grateful for what you have in your life. Best of luck, you have an incredibly bright life ahead, should you take advantage of it!

A big congratulations on getting into UBC Dentistry!
Now the adventure begins 🙂

There will be many ups and downs on this rollercoaster ride called DMD, but always keep your chin up and work with your classmates as a team — just like hydrogen bonds (nerdy, I know lol) you’re stronger together than individually. Don’t be scared to ask questions and be curious, faculty are amazing and are willing to go the extra mile. Be kind and respectful to everyone — fellow DMDs, faculty, CDAs — everyone is your colleague!

Most importantly, remember to take some time for yourself to recharge and find balance during this 4-year journey! Let the fun begin and congrats again! 🙂

All the best this coming year!

Hi there, congratulations on choosing Dental Hygiene as your future career! You have chosen well. My time as a dental hygienist (43 years!) provided me with opportunities for friendship, lifelong learning, financial independence, and career satisfaction. Yes, it was physically challenging over the years, but with a regular fitness routine and occasional tuneups from the physiotherapist I was able to maintain a long and rewarding career. The continuing education and convention days provided opportunities for growth and support from my colleagues. Our class of 20 still plan reunions. Our last getaway was Dec 2019 (pre-pandemic) at Yellowpoint Lodge on Vancouver Island (45 years post graduation). The friendships you will encounter are lifelong. Absolutely no regrets:) Enjoy your journey!

A warm welcome to the start of your exciting Dental Hygiene Education at UBC! You will have an opportunity to be educated by an amazing and talented Dental Hygiene and Dental professionals who will inspire and provide you with a wealth of information. After I completed my Bachelor of Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky, I had many wonderful opportunities... teaching, 1st Dental Hygienist at the BC Cancer Agency, and my favourite was providing preventive & clinical Dental Hygiene care as a team member in private practice. This year our class had a fun Zoom 50th Celebration where all Class of ‘1971’ members participated. We are a passionate group who all had fascinating dental hygiene and dental careers. We are so happy that we have stayed in touch and always look forward to our reunions. You will be in a profession that has so much importance to health and well being.

All the best during your time at UBC and your future awesome career!

Welcome to your new future!

This is an incredibly exciting day as you step into the UBC School of Dental Hygiene and embark on a path towards your chosen profession. You are bound to meet interesting people, experience a variety of academic challenges and develop new skills that will form the foundation of your future achievements. You may be feeling nervous, excited, and maybe a bit overwhelmed but try to savour this moment - it is the first day of the rest of your life!

Some useful tips - If you need a good cup of house-roasted coffee (and you will!) the best find is Boulevard Coffee Roasting Co. To ease the pain in your sweet tooth, grab a fresh-baked cookie from Blue Chip Cookies in the SUB. To burn off pre-exam jitters, walk/run the trails of the endowment lands that surround UBC - just keep Google maps handy so you find your way back!

Welcome to the Dental Hygiene program at UBC!

“Focus on improving yourself, and not on proving yourself”

Welcome to the Dental Hygiene program! Congratulations on all of your hard work, which got you here today. You have so much to be proud of already! I have no doubt that you have the most amazing four years ahead of you, full of both professional and personal growth. The Dental Hygiene program at UBC is a great place to get involved within the university community, including many opportunities to take part in research or with various organizations. Make the most of your time here! I always loved to study at one of the coffee shops on campus - Loafe and Great Dane are my favs! Lastly, remember that you are, as a student, learning the most up-to-date information. As you are starting out it can be easy to feel less experienced, but keep in mind that you have the best and newest information, skills, and familiarity with new technologies... that is a very valuable asset!

Best of luck in your studies!

Whether you chose this educational path to utilise your skills and knowledge for the benefit of other people or to fulfill your lifelong goal of poking said people in the mouth, you’are in for a worthwhile ride. Worthwhile, albeit stressful. So, in your dental hygiene school starter pack, be sure to include: a water bottle—gotta stay hydrated, snacks—for those long lectures, and a social support network of new lifelong friends.

Take care of yourself!
