Learner Mistreatment

Have You Been Mistreated or Witnessed Mistreatment?

The UBC Faculty of Dentistry is committed to providing a respectful and inclusive space for all students. It is everyone’s responsibility to create an environment where everyone can succeed. We need your help to identify, prevent, and solve problems related to mistreatment and discrimination in the Faculty of Dentistry. Learners can report events that they have either experienced or witnessed in the learning environment or community that they believe constitute mistreatment or were contrary to UBC policies, including the FOD Professional Standards or the UBC Respectful Environment Statement.

If you are subject to mistreatment, or witness mistreatment in the learning environment:

  1. Stay calm, and if safe, confront the person and tell them to stop their behaviour. If you are a witness to mistreatment, support the learner who is being mistreated.
  2. Leave the situation if you or others are concerned about safety. If necessary, call security or 911.
  3. Talk to someone you trust. This will help you decide what you wish to do next.
  4. Document what happened from your perspective in as much detail as possible.
  5. Report your experience through the online reporting tool. If you prefer, you may contact any faculty member within the Faculty of Dentistry instead.
