In 2024, UBC Continuing Dental Education (CDE) offered a course in Geriatric Dentistry—the first of its kind in Canada!

Fifteen dentists from across Canada participated, led by Dr. Nicholas Tong and Geriatric Dentistry Program Director Chris Wyatt, DMD 1986, who taught an immersive program on managing the dental needs of frail and functionally dependent older adults. The three-day program included didactic lectures, a hands-on glass ionomer workshop and a clinical observation session at a long-term care facility.

“Most dentists who graduate have little to no geriatric training,” says Dr. Tong. “Our philosophy is that every general dentist should know how to treat and manage older adults, so they receive the best dental care possible.”

The course was so well received that a second offering was held in October 2025.
