UBC Dentistry clinical faculty promotions

The Dean’s Office is excited to announce that four faculty members have been successfully promoted within their perspective departments:

Dr. Sam Cheung

Dr. Wa Sham Cheung has been promoted to the rank of Clinical Professor in the Department of Oral Health Sciences. Dr. Cheung completed his DDS in 1976 at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and his Diploma Pedodontics in 1982 at the University of Toronto. He joined UBC as a Clinical Lecturer in 1986. He has served as the Acting Chief of the Department of Dentistry, BC Children’s Hospital when needed from 2012 to 2018 and has been the Interim Chief of the Department of Dentistry, BCCH since August 27, 2018. He was the keynote speaker for the 2018 Annual Pediatric Endowed Lecture, University of Alberta. His teaching and research areas are pediatric dentistry and oral pathology in pediatric patients.

 

Dr. Lamia El-Adwar

Dr. Lamia El-Adwar has been promoted to the rank of Clinical Professor in the Department of Oral Biological & Medical Sciences. Dr. El-Adwar earned her Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1994 and a GPR Certificate of Internship in 1995, from Alexandria University, Egypt. She then taught as a clinical instructor in the School of Dentistry at Glasgow University in 1996. In 2001, at Alexandria University, Egypt, she completed a combined specialty program in Conservative Dentistry (Endodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics & Operative Dentistry) and a Master of Science degree. Dr. El-Adwar joined the Faculty of Dentistry at UBC in 2004. In 2005, she completed the Faculty Certificate Program on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Over the span of the past 15 years, she assumed numerous administrative responsibilities and teaching roles, and was the recipient of multiple full-time teaching awards. Currently she is the module coordinator of the Integrated General Practice III module, Chair of the Cariology Consultancy Cluster, and Lab Liaison. She is actively involved in DMD curriculum development and planning, specifically in Cariology. Through chairing the Cariology Consultancy Cluster, and in collaboration with the cluster members, she developed the current Cariology curriculum that spirals throughout the four years of the DMD program.

 

Ms. Sabina Reitzik

Ms. Sabina Reitzik has been promoted to the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Biological & Medical Sciences. Ms Reitzik earned her CDA certificate in 2001 and a Provincial Instructor Diploma in 2015 from Vancouver Community College. She was credited in Conflict Mediation Negotiation from the Justice Institute in 2016, and is undertaking a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree through Thompson Rivers University. She is a CDSBC board member (since 2016) and has recently completed a two year term as a CDSBC Disciplinary Member. Since 2015 she has been Vice Chair of the CDSBC CDA Advisory Committee. In 2019 she was a CBCT radiology panel speaker at the PDC and also won a UBC Dentistry Teaching Award in May. Her teaching area is radiography and she is also a Faculty Advisor. To her health and fitness credit, she has competed in three full marathons (42 km) and is an avid swimmer.

 

Dr. Rafat Sobouti

Dr. Rafat Sobouti has been promoted to the rank of Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Health Sciences. Dr Sobouti earned her DDS degree in 1980 at Tehran University of Medical Science where she also completed a specialty degree in Diagnosis and Oral Medicine in 1991. Between 1980 and 1997 she served in several capacities a faculty member at Tehran University of Medical Science as well as a dentist in public and private practice. She wrote the National Dental examining Board of Canada Equivalency Program exam in 2013. She joined UBC first in the Faculty of Medicine in 1998 and then Dentistry in 2005. She is a graduate of the UBC Faculty Certificate Program on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, a five-time recipient of the Faculty of Dentistry Teaching Awards (2012–2016). Since 2016, she have served as Clinical Advisor.
