The Faculty of Dentistry is proud to share that four UBC Dentistry students have been awarded prestigious Canada Graduate Scholarships from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
These awards provide special recognition to students with high potential for future research achievement and highlight their important contributions to oral health and biomedical research across Canada.
Ilena Yim (PhD Year 2), supervised by Dr. Denise Laronde, received a CIHR CGS-D Award valued at $120,000. The award will support her research from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2028, on, “The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on oral cancer incidence in British Columbia, Canada.”
Krysia MacRae (MSc Year 1), supervised by Dr. Jessica Rosin, received a CIHR CGS-M Award worth $27,000 for the period of May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026. Her research project is titled, “Studying the impact of maternal sleep disruptions on fetal neurodevelopment and offspring behaviour.”
Parsa Shafiei (MSc Year 2), supervised by Dr. Daniel Graf, received a CIHR CGS-M Award valued at $27,000. His research, supported from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026, is titled, “Reciprocal roles of Bmp2 and Bmp7 in chondrocyte differentiation and cartilage type specification.”
Maryam Shakeri (MSc Year 2), supervised by Dr. Daniel Graf, received a CIHR CGS-M Award valued at $27,000. Her research, supported from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026, explores, “MMP14 regulation of temporomandibular joint and suture morphology.”
