This advanced training program in orthodontics enables Certified Dental Assistants, regulated by the BC College of Oral Health Professionals, to acquire the designation in expanded duties in Orthodontics. It is also an opportunity for Dental Hygienists, regulated by the College of Dental Hygienists of BC, to obtain formal advanced education in this area.
The University of British Columbia has been offering the Orthodontic Module since 1979, and the team of instructors is very committed to making this a valuable and successful learning experience. As the clinical portion of this course can be difficult for participants, it is a pre-requisite that those attending have a minimum of ONE year of clinical experience in a dental practice. Participants are also required to have a current active license to practice in British Columbia and should have good vision (or effective corrective lens) for close work.
Please note: During the course participants will work intraorally on each other and are required to have adequate bandable teeth. If in braces, participants will be required to dewire and debracket some teeth. Or, participants will need to provide a stand-in.
Limited Enrolment
50 hours of instruction
Pre-requisite: Active license to practice in British Columbia / 1 year experience
Clinicians: Members of the B.C. Society of Orthodontists and Certified Orthodontic Assistants
Location: UBC Faculty of Dentistry

Like all professions, orthodontic practices and procedures have changed and evolved over the years. Depending upon your experiences in practice since you participated in an Orthodontic Module, your understanding of orthodontic techniques and procedures may not be current. This program will provide you with an up-to-date knowledge base.
The Update is open to CDAs and RDHs who have already completed an accredited Orthodontic Module. You can take this course regardless of whether or not you are currently licensed to practice, or employed. This course is NOT applicable to participants who are required by the College of Dental Surgeons of BC to be recertified in Orthodontics.
The program will run Wednesday May 20 – Friday May 22 inclusive from 8:30am – 5:30pm. Participants in the Module Update will attend the same lecture sessions as the participants in the UBC Orthodontic Module 2020 Licensing Program, but will not attend the clinical component of the Program. As such, there is no examination or clinical evaluation for participants in the Module Update.
