Artodontia 2020 Winners

Dr. Carol-Ann Courneya, Associate Professor, Dept. of Cellular & Physiological Science announced the winners of the Artodontia 2020 competition showcasing DMD’s students artistic conceptualization of the human heart and circulatory system. The contest was open to all first year dental students in the cardiovascular block. The prizes were: First Place – $150 Amazon gift card; Second Place – $100 Amazon gift card and Third Place – Omron automatic blood pressure monitor.

Here are the winners of 2020:
First Place (2020): “In a heartbeat” by Melissa Liu, DMD 2023

“This submission represents how quickly the first 6 months of dental school passed by, or as one would say, “in a heartbeat.” Before we know it, we will start seeing patients and eventually graduate as dentists, colleagues, and life-long friends. This ECG stop motion nail art was created with gel polish and, similar to certain restorative materials, cured under an LED light.”
Second Place (2020): “Heart Strings” by Shalini Kirupakaran, DMD 2023
“Heart Strings is the anatomical representation of the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood flowing through our heart. Nails were used to form the outline of the heart and used different coloured strings to fill in to represent ‘blood’.”
Third Place (2020): “Heart Clenched” by Kyu Young Park
“This digital art represents the excitement and pressure that we experience in dentistry. As dental students and professionals, teeth are at core of our hearts and play a crucial part of all of our lives. Like the four chambers of the heart, teeth keeps our hearts pumping!”
