Each year the College of Dental Surgeons of BC (CDSBC) recognizes individuals from across the province at an annual awards ceremony. This year on March 8 at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver, Dr. David Sweet O.C. received the College’s highest award: The Honoured Member Award. The night also witnessed recognition of several alumni for their work and service.

Honoured Member Award

Dr. David Sweet O.C.
The Honoured Member Award is presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the art and science of dentistry or to the dental profession over a sustained period of time.
David Sweet O.C., DMD, PhD, is a professor and the Associate Dean of Students at the Faculty of Dentistry. The College recognized his enormous contribution to dentistry on a provincial, national and international level.
Sweet is credited with inventing the process for extracting DNA from teeth for body identification, an considerable benefit to the public and for dentists and dentistry overall.
He was invested in 2008 as Officer of the Order of Canada for his work in forensic science as a teacher, researcher and consultant.
He is also lead forensic odontologist for Disaster Victim Identification Canada and former chief forensic odontologist scientist on the INTERPOL Disaster Victim Identification Standing Committee.

Other CDSBC Awards to Alumni
The College’s Distinguished Service Award recognizes outstanding and broad contributions to the profession of dentistry through extensive involvement with the College. This year’s recipient is Dr. William Liang BSc 1981, DMD 1983.
The College’s Award of Merit, which recognizes significant contributions, beyond basic volunteer participation, that have had an impact on the profession of dentistry through involvement with CDSBC, was conferred upon three UBC Dentistry alumni: Drs. Gail Landsberger DMD 1984, Lonny Legault BSc 1992, DMD 1996, and Ian Leitch DMD 1983.
