Congratulations to Dr. Ahmed Hieawy, Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Biological and Medical Sciences, Division of Endodontics, who has been awarded a 2025 3M National Teaching Fellowship Award, Canada’s most prestigious recognition of educational leadership and teaching excellence.
Fellows are selected each year based on their exemplary commitment to supporting the educational experience of every learner. The Fellows’ initiatives are supported by 3M Canada, the Society of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) and the Council of Fellows, a constituent group within STLHE.
Dr. Hieawy’s unwavering dedication to teaching excellence and fostering his students’ passion for discovery and knowledge grounds his teaching approach. His thoughtfully designed curriculum, delivered in an engaging and collaborative learning environment, inspires students in their educational journeys and professional careers in dentistry. The result is graduates who emerge as confident dental practitioners and educators, embodying the values of competence, compassion and innovation.
A recipient of multiple teaching excellence awards at UBC and nationally, including a 2024 ACFD National Dental Teaching Award and 2022-23 Killam Teaching Prize, Dr. Hieawy’s teaching has had a lasting impact on his students.
As an innovative educational leader, he is committed to continuous growth with a vision grounded in adaptability and purposeful change. He has collaboratively led curriculum renewal and faculty teaching development efforts and integrated the latest technology into programming with the Dentistry team over several years.
Dr. Hieawy’s leadership in endodontics extends internationally. He has been instrumental in developing an international competency framework for caries diagnosis, an applied mentorship model for clinical training and integrating artificial intelligence tools into dental diagnostics.
