Dr. Isra Ibrahim: Advancing Research in Cleft Lip
Dr. Ibrahim’s research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms behind normal lip development to identify factors that contribute to orofacial clefting. She investigates the role of small signaling proteins and the human genes that regulate these proteins, to better understand how cleft lip develops. By uncovering these mechanisms, her work aims to improve early interventions and potential treatments for affected individuals. Read more
Dr. Fernanda Almeida: Pioneering Sleep Apnea Research
Dr. Almeida’s research explores the evolving field of sleep apnea, with a focus on better understanding patient preference and adherence to existing treatments. Her work has helped enhance patient outcomes, leading to greater understanding and improved management of this disorder. Read more
Dr. Ersilia Coccaro: Paying it Forward by Mentoring Students
Ersilia Coccaro received her PhD in biochemistry before completing her DMD in 2012. Her science background helps her problem-solve in the clinic, and her understanding of material sciences means she has a unique approach to treatment planning. Dr. Coccaro started mentoring students in 2019 as part of the UBC Dentistry Summer Student Practitioner Program. She welcomes incoming fourth-year DMD students into her practice in Kelowna, BC, to fuel her passion for teaching while helping students gain real-world experience. Read more
