The Faculty of Dentistry is pleased to formally announce that Dr. Warren Roberts has recently been appointed to the position of Dean’s Advisor on Indigenous Affairs, and Co-director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, as well as a part-time clinical professor in the Department of Oral Health Sciences, Division of General Dentistry.
Dr. Roberts is an Indigenous graduate of the UBC Faculty of Dentistry (Class of 1977), and has over 40 years of experience as a practicing general dentist in Vancouver. Dr. Warren Roberts’ family has firm roots in Campbell River as members of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation and active innovators of the local fishing industry. His father William Frances Roberts, often called the “Sockeye King”, was the hereditary Chief and served as a global fishing consultant for the United Nations. Currently serving the Wei Wai Kum First Nation are family members Chris Roberts (elected Chief) and Tony Roberts Jr. (council member). The Wei Wai Kum First Nation (Campbell River Indian Band, British Columbia), with 788 members, participates in a variety of economic and social programs, services and activities that promote the well-being and prosperity of members.
Dr. Roberts will be heading our Dentistry Indigenous Working Group and enabling our Indigenous students within Dentistry. He will represent our Faculty on UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan committees as well as the UBC 23 24 Indigenous Cultural Safety Program working group.
