Since opening its doors in 1964, the UBC Faculty of Dentistry has graduated over 3,500 dental professionals who continue to impact communities worldwide. From dental hygienists to dentists to dental specialists, we are incredibly proud of our alumni family!
As part of our “in conversation with” series, where we connect with some of our outstanding alumni, and to celebrate Oral Health Month, we spoke with Norman Wong, DMD 1988, who practices in Hong Kong.
What got you interested in pursuing a career in dentistry?
I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands and was inspired by my cousin who was a dentist. I grew up in Hong Kong and decided to attend UBC because of its great reputation, which is where I completed my Bachelor of Science followed by dental school. After graduating I practiced in Vancouver for 12 years before moving back to Hong Kong.
What is one of your fondest memories of UBC?
I had the privilege of participating in one of the first dental student exchange programs to Japan in 1987 alongside two of my classmates. We spent time in Tokyo and Niigata and had the opportunity to observe students and instructors treating patients across many dentistry disciplines. We had a great time exploring the cities as well as the campuses and learned a lot about Japanese culture. Everyone made us feel welcome—we spent time together eating, watching fireworks and swimming—which were highlights for me.
What words of wisdom would you share with current dental students?
Our profession is all about passion—if you are passionate about what you do, you will succeed. I would also tell them supporting patients and serving their best interests should be top priority.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I love building Lego! My house has a Lego room where all my creations are on display, and every year I build based on a different theme. Even outside of my dental practice I enjoy working with my hands.
Describe a perfect afternoon.
A perfect afternoon for me would be playing golf and celebrating after with cocktails.
