After a decade of being closed due to safety regulations, the outside balcony area of the student lounge has been transformed into an impressive glass atrium.

Thanks to the vision and support of Nadean Burkett & Associates, students now have a tranquil and relaxing reprieve to enjoy the benefits of natural light and green space.

Nadean Burkett, a long-time supporter of UBC Dentistry, believes in a balanced life: “We need to have that opportunity to have a break, to interact on a social level. And I think that is what this area will really do.”

Jonathan Hung, fourth-year DMD student agrees, “This area helps us to wind down, refocus and to relax.”

Creating new student social areas is a goal in Dentistry’s strategic plan under the broad theme of enhancing the student experience.

Jonathan, imagining himself after a full day in the clinic, puts it well, “they transformed this into a place where students want to be.”

Plenty of natural light and views of the courtyard await students in the atrium of the student lounge located in the John B. Macdonald Building. An unused open-air terrace was converted into a glass-enclosed tranquil space for year-round use.

Nadean jumped at the chance to help make possible the construction of the atrium. Giving back and paying forward are integral to her business philosophy—a coaching point she also shares with her professional clients. Donating time or a portion of revenue is a way to share success within the community that has been so instrumental to her own success.
