Dr. HsingChi von Bergmann

Dr. HsingChi von Bergmann’s research lab, the UBC Dental Education Research Lab, is now a host for Taiwan’s Dragon Gate Program which is supported by that country’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). The program provides a research team (at least one academic institution researcher with a PhD student) for up to 130,000 USD to collaborate with overseas lab for a duration of two years. Dr. Bergmann’s lab–now one of seven MOST-listed labs in Canada including UBC’s Michael Smith Laboratories−will look forward to welcoming professors, PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows to conduct research in the area of health sciences education, learning, cognition, and public health education.

Dr. von Bergmann is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Health Sciences. She is an education expert who joined the Faculty in 2010 and her research interests include large-scale comparative studies (e.g. TIMSS), PBL, quantitative research methods, content analysis, program evaluation, science education (K–16), and dental education. She has been publishing widely in education journals, and consistently in the Journal of Dental Education. She also co-authored a book on 48 countries’ comparative education derived from her work with TIMSS. In 2016 she was awarded the ADEA/ADEA Gies Foundation Education Fellowship which allowed her to work at the ADEA Policy Center with the aim to further dental educator’s understanding in the areas of competencies assessments.
