The Dean’s Office is pleased to announce the appointments of three faculty members:

Dr. Zul Kanji
Zul Kanji, BSc, Dip.DH, MSc, EdD, has been promoted to Senior Instructor with tenure in the Department of Oral Biological & Medical Sciences.
Dr. Kanji earned a BSc (Nutritional Science) and MSc (Dental Science) from the University of British Columbia, his DipDH from Vancouver Community College, and his EdD (Educational Leadership in Post-Secondary Contexts) from Simon Fraser University. He is the Director of the Dental Hygiene Degree Program of which he teaches in all four years. His research interests include outcomes of baccalaureate educational models, competency-based education, and student retention and success in post-secondary education.

Dr. Caroline Tram Nguyen
Caroline Tram Nguyen, DMD, MS, FACP, FRCD(C), has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Oral Health Sciences.
Dr. Nguyen completed her Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Montreal in 2006, graduated Phi Kappa Phi for her Master of Sciences and Certificate in Advanced Education in Prosthodontics at the University of Maryland in 2009, and continued with a Fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics and Oral Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre in 2010. Her current research focus is on the side effects of medications, radiation therapy and hyperbaric oxygen treatments on oral health.

Dr. HsingChi von Bergmann
HsingChi von Bergmann, MSc, PhD, has been promoted to the rank of Professor with tenure in the Department of Oral Health Sciences.
Dr. von Bergmann started her career as a physics major while in Taiwan. She received a PhD in Curriculum & Instruction focusing on Science Education from the University of Southern California. While at USC, she started conducting research in problem-based-learning dental education working at the Craniofacial Molecular Biology Lab, in 1998. She joined the US National Research Center-TIMSS for five years after receiving her PhD, at the same time still continued mentoring and working with her USC colleagues in dental-education research. In 2003, she became a professor at the Faculty of Education at the University of Calgary. Dr. von Bergmann joined UBC in fall 2010 as an Education Specialist in the Faculty of Dentistry to conduct and mentor educational research activities, as well as to design modules and professional development activities to enhance teaching capacity and students’ educational experiences.
