Admission Requirements

The Faculty of Dentistry will open applications to the Dental Specialty Assessment & Training Program (DSATP) for the 2025-26 program in the following disciplines: Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry and Periodontics, by June 18th, 2024.

The deadline is January 15th for applications for the program commencing in the same year.

Please note that until we receive an online application we are not in a position to evaluate credentials.

Applicants are required to be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Academic Requirements

Applicants to a Dental Specialty Assessment and Training Program (DSATP) in the Faculty of Dentistry must have completed a minimum 2-year non-accredited specialty training program and hold a DMD or its equivalent from a non-accredited university. Applicants must have completed a training program in the specialty program they are applying to. For example, an applicant who wishes to apply to the DSATP for Orthodontics must have previously completed a minimum 2-year recognized specialty training program in Orthodontics in order to be eligible for admission to the Orthodontics DSATP.

Dental Specialty Core Knowledge Examination (DSCKE) results. The DSCKE exam result is valid if dated within 36 months prior to the application deadline of the cycle applying to. Beginning in the application cycle for 2025, in the absence of a DSCKE examination score, we will require applicants write the Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT). The ADAT exam is available every day from March 1 – August 31. Transcripts/Diplomas must be evaluated through the Educational Credential Evaluation (ECE) to be eligible to write the ADAT. Please arrange to send an official copy of the ECE Report and ADAT scores to our Admissions Office at admissions@dentistry.ubc.ca directly from source. There is no minimum score required.

English Proficiency Requirements

Applicants who received their qualifying degree from a country in which English is not the primary language must present evidence of proficiency in English. One of the following tests of English proficiency is acceptable:

TOEFL

The minimum TOEFL score required is 580 paper-based or 93 internet-based, taken within twenty-four (24) months prior to the application deadline. TOEFL score sheets must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Centre in sealed and official envelopes or submitted through the TOEFL website. The institution code for UBC Dentistry is B135. Photocopies of test scores are not acceptable.

IELTS

A minimum overall band score of 7.0 is required with a minimum score of 6.5 in each component of the academic (not general) IELTS test. IELTS score sheets must be taken within twenty-four (24) months prior to the application deadline and be sent directly from source in sealed and official envelopes, or you may e-mail us your “Test Report Form Number” if you have notified IELTS for UBC access. Photocopies of test report form  are not acceptable.

PLEASE NOTE: Given that the number of applicants exceeds the number of positions available, an application that satisfies the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.
