The annual cardiac art competition invites UBC Dentistry students to use creativity to conceptualize the human heart and circulatory system and how they relate to oral health
On February 29, Dr. Carol-Ann Courneya, Professor Emerita with the Faculty of Medicine, announced the winners of the 2024 Artodontia competition. The annual contest showcases artwork made by first-year DMD and DHDP students in the cardiovascular block. Students are challenged with creating an artistic conceptualization of the human heart and circulatory system, highlighting their connection to oral health.
1st place
Interconnected Vitality
Gabriela Podolski (DHDP 2026 candidate)
This drawing beautifully depicts the intricate connection between our oral health and cardiovascular health. As we strive to prioritize our overall systemic health, it is important to recognize and nurture both aspects. By acknowledging and addressing this interconnected relationship, we take steps towards a healthier balanced lifestyle.
2nd place
Hand Skills
Marcie Radecka (DMD 2027 candidate)
As dental students, developing our hand skills is a critical part of our future success. We spend time learning how to hold instruments and position our hands, but less considering what gives us the ability to use our hands in the first place, like the vasculature running through our hands. This piece was made with pencil, pencil crayon, and watercolour.
3rd place
Oral Harmony: A Bite of Vitality
Alice Wang (DHDP 2026 candidate)
Through my love for oil painting, I aimed to portray the symbiotic connection between the oral cavity and the cardiovascular system. Employing the imagery of a mouth biting down on a heart to encourage you to contemplate the beauty and necessity of a harmonious relationship between our mouths and our hearts.
